In the next chapter I look more closely at a central theme of Kean’s production: Assyria as a figure of entropy. While Kean’s emendations, pyrotechnics, tableaux, and processions distracted his audience from Byron’s troubling meditations on imperial identity and legacy over archaeological time, for many Victorian cultural pundits, Layard excavated more than just museum pieces: he also raised the specter of Assyria’s failed imperial destiny at a crucial moment in Britain’s own imperial history, the eve of the Crimean War. It is to this darker side of Assyrian archaeology that we now turn.
